Calcification of intraocular lenses from hydrophilic acrylate

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Occasional calcification of hydropilic intraocular lenses (IOL) is seen to be the long term problem, todays even of refractive surgery. Slight calcification can be missdiagnosed and YAG capsulotomy is indicated. Problems for easy surgical IOL removal become. Early diagnosis of calcification is necessary. Examination using the anterior segment spectral domain (ASSD)-OCT imaging is able to detect a slight calcification and other opacities in early stage and without mydriasis in contrast with Pentacam.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Regional Hospital and University of Pardubice, Czech Republic

Methods:

ASSD-OCT AvantiTM RT-Vue®XR100-2 with optic extension was used both for in vitro and in vivo study. In vitro the IOLs after explantation were glued on the glas in front of the optic extension of OCT. The corneal mode of single line was used for all events.

Results:

We have displayed calcifications of 25 IOL after explantation in vitro. Suspected calcification were displayed sucessfully in 3 patients in vivo. PentacamHR examination in mydriasis was not definitive. We have divided the types of calcification into 3 groups: 1. superficial homogenous calcification 2. focal superficial calcification 3.focal calcification in the deepness of raw material .

Conclusions:

ASSD-OCT is usable to display the calcification on time and without mydriasis.
