Evaluation of optical properties of in vitro degradated intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate optical properties of in vitro degradated intraocular lenses to simulate the effect of long-term changes in lens material on optical properties.

Setting:

1) Department of Ophthalmology, Military Institute of Medicine, Warsaw 2) Maksymilian Pluta Institute of Applied Optics, Warsaw

Methods:

Intraocular lenses made of different types of materials were degradated according to ISO 11979-5:2006 norm. All measurements were performed before and after degradation on optical bench. Measured parameters such as MTF (modulation transfer function) and contrast were taken with a green light (546nm) and a 3mm pupil diameter.

Results:

Comparison of MTF and contrast measurements on defocus for new lenses and lenses after degradation showed no visually significant differences.

Conclusions:

Presented results suggest that microscopically seen experimentally induced changes in intraocular lens material do not significantly affect performance of the lens. Further study, including among others light scattering measurements and measurements on explanted material, is needed to support this statement as well as determine influence of the degradation on the quality of vision.
