Late intraocular lens subluxation in uveitis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the clinical features of patients who had in the bag intraocular lens (IOL) subluxation during long-term follow-up.

Setting:

Istanbul Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

A retrospective case series of 14 eyes of 13 patients with chronic uveitis from a single referral center. All eyes underwent uneventful phacoemulsification and endocapsular IOL implantation. Age, interval between the cataract surgery and subluxation of IOL, diagnosis of uveitis and visual acuity at last follow-up were assessed.

Results:

The mean age of the patients at diagnosis with IOL subluxation was 58.71 12.95 (33.00-80.00) years. The mean interval between time of cataract surgery and IOL subluxation was 10.57 3.90 years (range: 4.00-15.84). Sarcoidosis (6/14) (42.85%) was the most common diagnosis, followed by Behcet disease (3/14) (21.42%) and herpetic uveitis (2/14) (14.28%). None of the eyes required further surgery for the replacement of IOL.

Conclusions:

IOL subluxation may occur as a late term complication of cataract surgery in eyes with uveitis and can be managed conservatively in selected cases.
