Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze rate of endothelial cell loss after cataract surgery in eyes with low endothelial cell density and compare with eyes with normal endothlial cell density
Setting:
University hospital Sestre milosrdnice, Zagreb, Croatia
Methods:
Cataract surgery was performed in eyes with endothelial cell density less than 1000 cells/mm2 and eyes with normal endothlial cell density (control group). The rate of endothelial cell loss and central corneal thickness were measured postoperatively and compared.
Results:
The low endothlial cell density group and group with normal endothelial cell density each compromised 15 eyes. The mean rate of endothelial cell loss was < 10% in both groups. There was no significant difference in the percentage of cell loss between groups. The central corneal thickness was greater in low endothelial cell density group.
Conclusions:
Corneal endothelial cell loss in eyes with low endothelial cell density was slight and comparable with healthy eyes.
