Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare and evaluate the early post-operative outcomes and patient satisfaction scores following phaco-emulsification and intra-ocular lens implantation while using an OVD and without an OVD (hydro-implantation) in the anterior chamber.

Setting:

A total of 100 eyes of 100 patients with senile cataracts and no other ocular conditions, were operated upon for cataract surgery at Jyoti Kendra Hospital, Ludhiana, India.

Methods:

100 eyes of 100 patients with primary senile cataracts (non-mature) underwent phoco-emulsification by the same surgeon, using the same technique and implanting the same single-piece hydrophobic acrylic posterior chamber intra-ocular lens implant. In 50 of these eyes, IOL implantation was done after pre-filling the anterior chamber with the same kind of visco-dispersive OVD. In the other 50 eyes, IOL implantation was done without pre-filling the anterior chamber with any OVD, using continuous irrigation (hydro-implantation). Post-operative outcomes on day 0 and 1, and patient satisfaction score on day 1 were recorded to compare the outcome in the 2 set of eyes.

Results:

Post-operative outcomes on days 0 and 1 were recorded under visual acuity, intra-ocular pressure, circum-ciliary congestion, corneal clarity and aqueous reaction. Patient satisfaction scores were noted using a set questionaire. Post-operative outcomes on day 0 and 1 were significantly better in the patients with intra-ocular lenses implanted using hydro-implantation (P=.01). Patient satisfaction was also significantly better in the group with intra-ocular lenses implanted using hydro-implantation (P=.01).

Conclusions:

Patients undergoing cataract surgery with hydro-implantation of intra-ocular lenses fared significantly better than those with lenses implanted using an OVD. Hydro-implantation complements the benefits of topical anesthesia and foldable intra-ocular lens implantation.
