Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine ocular complications in children with Marfan syndrom and evaluate the visual outcome in children with ectopia lentis.

Setting:

Children with Marfan syndrom who were referred for ophthalmological examination to the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Medical University of Vienna.

Methods:

Seventy-six eyes of patients with genetically proved diagnosis of Marfan syndrom were retrospectively evaluated regarding ocular complications and visual acuity outcomes in ectopia lentis with or without lensectomy.

Results:

In 63% a subluxation of the lens was visible.54% of the patients with ectopia lentis received lensectomy. Mean follow-up of the patients with ectopia lentis was 3years.66% of the patients presented with myopia <-10diopters, 18% with >-10diopters.In patients with normal lens status(n=14) VA was 0.8±0.3/0.9±0.2, in patients with subluxation of the lens(n=24) VA was 0.5±0.3/0.5±0.3 at initial presentation(p<0.01).In children with subuxation of the lens without lensectomy(n=11) last VA improved from 0.5±0.3/0.5±0.3 to 0.7±0.3/0.7±0.2(p=0.08/0.3) at last follow-up.Patients who were referred to lensectomy with/without lens implantation VA improved from 0.5±0.3/0.5±0.3 to 0.6±0.3/0.7±0.2(p=0.2/0.03).

Conclusions:

In Marfan syndrome subluxation of the lens was found in the majority of the children. Good visual acuity results were observed in children with subluxation of the lens or following lensectomy.
