Focusing on dense cataract ARGOS performance: comparison between axial length measurement before and after cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of our study is to verify feasibility and reliability of Axial Length measurement which was performed using ARGOS (SS-OCT) Biometer in clinically significant dense cataract, in which the Axial Length measurement was not obtained with our IOLMaster500 biometer(50 eyes).

Setting:

University Of Bari “Aldo Moro” Department Of Smbnos; Section of Ophthalmology.

Methods:

AL measurement was performed using IOLMaster500 (PCI) in all patients and in 56 eyes this measurement was unreliable or undetermined. In these 56 eyes, AL measurement was performed using Argos (SS-OCT) before and after cataract surgery and then compared. When necessary, was used Ultrasound Biometer (OPTIKON2000).

Results:

The clinical relevance of these measurement differences, mean 0.10344 , which ranges from 0 to 0.92 (89% ≤ 0.2), is insignificant in IOL Power Calculation (small difference in estimate refractive target).

Conclusions:

There are fewer cases of total cataracts because many patients prefer an early surgery, due to rapid postoperatory recovery, many people prefer to undergo surgery at the onset of the first symptoms coupled with the possibility of correcting refractive defects. During our study when Argos biometer was available only 6 US biometries were performed, with significant advantages for patient and surgeon preoperatively and on the postoperative refractive result. The usefulness of this instrument has proved to be particularly evident in dense opacities affecting visual axis.
