Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare modified 30 G needle under air Trypan Blue (TB) dye staining technique with under viscoadaptive substance staining technique
Setting:
Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute, Amritsar, India
Methods:
In this case control prospective study, 100 eyes undergoing phacoemulsification were randomized into two groups. Group I (50 eyes) underwent trypan blue staining with modified 30 G needle staining technique and group II (50 eyes) underwent under viscoadaptive staining using 0.08% TB dye (Rhex ID, Appasamy ocular devices Pvt Ltd, India).
Results:
In group I, anterior chamber remained stable during the hold time of 15 seconds with no egress of air. The staining intensity was excellent in 81.2 % of the eyes and good in 18.8% of the eyes whereas in group II, staining intensity was excellent in 79.8 % and good in 20.2 % (p > 0.05). No iatrogenic trauma occurred in any of the cases. All cases had a homogeneously stained anterior capsule. Tyrpan blue used was more in group II as compared to group I.
Conclusions:
Trypan blue staining under air using modified 30 G needle technique and under viscoadpative substance gives comparable homogenous staining of the anterior capsule. However, more drops of the dye are required while performing under viscoelastic substance staining.
