Abstract Details
Purpose:
to compare the depth of focus provided by a shift of 0.5D in the addition of bifocal IOLs.
Setting:
Hospital Habib Thameur, Ophthalmology Department,Tunis, Tunisia,
Centre Vision Bretagne, Vannes, France,
Hôpital des XV-XX, Paris, France,
Fondation Rothschild, Paris, France,
Hôpital universitaire de Rennes, Rennes, France,
Reims, France
Methods:
in this controlled trial, 35 patients were rather implanted with bilateral +3D bifocal IOLs (group 1) or with a mix and match +2.5D/+3D bifocal IOLs (group 2). Monocular and binocular, uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity at 4m, 60 cm and 40 cm were screened as well as monocular and binocular distance corrected defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and overall patient satisfaction.
Results:
One site met 3 complications : one TASS, one eye with IOL deposits and one decentration. The 3 complications were successfully solved. The distance-corrected visual acuity at far, intermediate and near was respectively -0.02±0.9, 0.11±0.16 and 0.13±0.09 in group 1 and -0.01±0.04, 0.05±0.15 and 0.13±0.09 in group 2. Both IOL gave contrast sensitivity in the range of the population age. We could not discriminate a situation where one of the two groups had better outcomes. Nevertheless, the combination of +2.5D/+3D seems to provide better intermediate vision in objective and subjective tests.
Conclusions:
At the time of trifocality, mix and match with high energy peaks remains a good option for surgeons who want to be sure to achieve sharp vision from 60 cm to 40 cm.
