Purpose:
To report a new technique for performing sutureless intrascleral fixation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens for correction of aphakia
Setting:
Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Medicine, Samsun, TURKEY
Methods:
Scleral tunnels were created using a 23 or 25-gauge MVR knife without conjunctival peritomy, the haptics of the IOL were externalized with the aid of a special designed 30-gauge polimer tube passed through the ciliary sulcus. Then the haptics were fixed in the scleral tunnels.
Results:
The technique was performed in 8 patients and there were no complications or side effects during 6 months of follow-up. No wound leakage was seen postoperatively.
Conclusions:
This technique provides good IOL fixation and does not require the use of other instrumentation used in several sutureless scleral fixation techniques. It causes minimal trauma to the structures of the eye and can be performed even by novice surgeons. This technique also can be performed even in cases miosis.
