Outcomes of in-the-bag toric intraocular lens implantation (IOL) in cases of anterior capsule tear (ACT)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze outcomes of in-the-bag toric IOL insertion in cases of ACT during phacoemulsification

Setting:

Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK

Methods:

This is a retrospective, consecutive, interventional case series. Inclusion criteria were ACT and placement of toric IOL in-the-bag. Exclusion criteria were other related intraoperative complications (posterior capsule tear, vitreous loss, zonular dialysis) and missing information regarding the postoperative refraction.

Results:

8 patients were identified; one patient was excluded as the tear was used to enlarge the rhexis. The mean preoperative astigmatism was -1.67D (±0.98) and the mean preoperative unaided logMAR visual acuity was 0.62 (±0.76). The mean angle between the ACT and the closest IOL haptic was 51.25degrees (range: 30degrees-90degrees). The final unaided logmar visual acuity was 0.16 (±0.21) and the final cylinder was -1.1D (±0.59). The mean follow up time was 2 months (±1.2 months).

Conclusions:

In our case series no IOL had to be explanted or rotated postoperatively. Placement of toric IOL in the presence ACT was safe in our patients. An angle of at least 30 degrees remained between the ACT and the IOL haptic in our study.
