Abstract Details

Purpose:

The main objective of the study was the comparison of glistening and posterior ocular opacification (PCO) among two hydrophobic lenses, Vivinex XC1 Hoya and SN60 WF Alcon. The secondary objectives were visual acuity (VA), refractive outcome, standard deviation to refraction, and safety.

Setting:

Longitudinal, monocentric randomized prospective study conducted in Cochin hospital, Paris Descartes university.

Methods:

Patients underwent cataract surgery in a standardized manner between July 2015 and February 2016. Both Hoya Vivinex XC1 and SN60WF were implanted in a same patient and the first eye randomly chosen. Patients were examined at 6 month, one and two years. PCO was evaluated on anterior segment photography. Glistening was quantified using scale from 0 to 5. We compared the best corrected visual acuity (ETDRS), and the deviation to preoperative target refraction, based on results of non-contact biometer using SRKT formula (IOL Master Zeiss).

Results:

We included 40 patients, 27 women and 13 men. The mean age was at surgery time 77 years [48-90]. A moderate PCO was observed with Hoya in 2 eyes versus 4 eyes with Alcon. Capsulotomy by laser YAG wasn’t required. With Hoya XC1 Vivinex, glistening was observed in 58,3 % of eye and limited to grade 2. Glistening with SN60WF Alcon was observed in 91,7% patients and distributed as grade 1, 33 %, grade 3, 8,3%, grade 4, 8,3% and grade 5, 50%. The mean deviation to the target refraction was 0,325 Diopters with Vivinex and 0,321 for SN60WF.

Conclusions:

The refractive results appeared to be identical between the two implants as well as their safety, at 6, 12 and 24 months. We reported more glistening with the SN60WF than with the Vivinex XC1 lenses. Regarding PCO, no differences were observed. Refractive results were equivalent between the two lenses. The two intra ocular lenses were similar regarding asphericity, square optical edges, blue light filter. However only Vivinex XC1 benefits from a pre-loaded injector. Authors discuss PCO factors including posterior surface argon’s treatment, and role of raw material for glistening formation.
