Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate if there is a difference in pain perception between fellow eyes in immediately sequential bilateral refractive lens exchange.
Setting:
Lasik MD Quebec, Quebec City (Quebec), Canada.
Lasik MD Saguenay, Saguenay (Quebec), Canada.
Methods:
We performed immediately sequential bilateral refractive lens exchange surgery in 160 patients. All patients were then asked which eye, if any, was the most painful.
Results:
In that study, a higher degree of pain was reported during second-eye surgery by 64% of patients, 11% reported more pain in the first eye, and 24% reported equal pain in both eyes. There was no difference toward a higher degree of pain during the second-eye surgery in patients of any gender.
Conclusions:
The majority of patients found the surgery of the second eye more painful. Some possible explanations can be psychological, pharmacological or physiological.
