Abstract Details

Purpose:

Analysis of the light transmission of some phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) explanted from the eye after several years.

Setting:

FISABIO_Oftalmología Médica, Valencia (Spain)

Methods:

We have measured the light transmission of pIOLs from 280 to 1000 nm (each 5 nm) with a Perkins-Elmer Lambda 800 spectrometer to analyze the transmission at ultraviolet (UVB, UVA), vision range and part of infrared (IR) spectra. We have taken 3 measurements for each lens. The pIOLs selected were pIOLs explanted due to cataract surgery, that means in order to replace de phakic IOL for a aphakic IOL. This way, we assure the pIOL is not damaged or broken by mechanical factors.

Results:

We have measured 4 kinds of pIOL:; 6 artisan, 4 baikoff, 2 ICL and 3 I-care. The mean of years of these lenses inside the eye was for artisan 20±4, for baikoff 5±3, for I-care 13±2, for ICL 8.5±0.5. The transmission for IR and vision range is over 90% except for ICL, its transmission between 400-500 nm decreased under 90%. We have obtained the mean lambda cutoff (lambda at 10% of transmittance): artisan 393nm, Baikoff 367nm, I-care 362 nm and ICL: 396nm

Conclusions:

All pIOLs have a good light transmission for vision range throughout years. ICL show less transmission for blue colors, the material at first sight is yellowish. The UV filter is good for all types of lenses although it is different between them, and it don’t suffer important changes along the time. Nevertheless, more measurements are needed to corroborate these results.
