Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ReLex SMILE for the treatment of myopia with or without astigmatism and also to assess the mid-term refractive stability of this new technique in patients treated in our clinic.

Setting:

AmaOptimex Eye Clinic

Methods:

We included in our study a number of 900 eyes that underwent ReLex SMILE procedure in our clinic in the last 3 years and 3 months (November 2014 until January 2018). Some of them had associated astigmatism. Preoperative, 3, 6 months’, one, two and three years’ follow-up examinations, included: manifest refraction, uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity, corneal thickness, and Pentacam HR to evaluate changes in total corneal refractive power (TCRP).

Results:

The averaged preoperative spherical equivalent was -5,68 D and did not change significantly from 3, 6, 12 and so on after surgery, for those cases we manage to observe for longer. At three months 87% were within +/-0,5 D and 96 %+/-1 D of the attempted refraction and similar at 6 months, one year, two and three years postoperatively.

Conclusions:

ReLex SMILE is safe and effective, with good level of refractive accuracy and stability even after the first month, in treating myopia. Even though a myopic regression was observed in Pentacam but not in subjective refraction. We were not obliged to enhance any patient so far.
