Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report refractive and subjective results of laser vision enhancement in eyes after clear lense extraction and implantation of a multifocal, trifocal lens (MIOL).

Setting:

University Hospital and private chain of refractive surgery centres in Germany.

Methods:

Retrospective non-interventional cohort study of two groups of consecutive refractive cases (LASIK and PRK). Group 1 (n= 66, study group) received an MIOL with subsequent laser vision correction after 6-month follow-up min. and was compared to group 2 (n= 33, control group) that had MIOL surgery-only. Efficacy and safety index (EI and SI) and predictability of the treatment were compared accompanied by patient reported outcome.

Results:

Independent of laser enhancement, both the treatment strategies resulted in high levels of EI, SI and predictability. There were no statistically significant differences between eyes with MIOL surgery-only compared to eyes with Laser touch-up (differences in EI, SI and predictability = P>0.1, respectively). Patients subjective report of satisfaction was higher in the control group; however, no statistically significant differences were obtained compared to those candidates with laser enhancement (P= 0.630).

Conclusions:

In patients with residual refractive error after MIOL surgery, PRK and LASIK offer reliable, secure and efficient options to aim desired refractive results and most patients’ expectations.
