Quantitative assessment of posterior capsule opacification in intraocular lenses with a continuous sharp optic edge design

Abstract Details

Purpose:

It is anticipated that a continuous sharp edge across optic-haptic junctions would be effective in preventing posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). This prospective observation case series was aimed to assess PCO in IOLs with a continuous sharp optic edge over 3 years after implantation.

Setting:

Miyata Eye Hospital, Miyakonojo, Miyazaki, Japan

Methods:

In 15 eyes, ZCB00V (Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision) with a continuous sharp optic edge design were implanted and followed up for 3 years. Seventeen eyes with SN60WF (Alcon) with an interrupted sharp edge design were also followed up as control. At 1 and 3 years postoperatively, Scheimpflug images in 4 directions and a retroillumination image was obtained with the EAS-1000 (Nidek). Densitometry in posterior capsule in Scheimpflug image was obtained. Distribution of PCO in the retroillumination image was measured using POCOman software. The distribution and positions of optic-haptic junctions were identified from video records of surgery and were compared.

Results:

In the densitometry analysis, there was no significant difference from the control (P=0.45, t-test). The POCOman analysis results showed that the PCO distributions did not change between 1 and 3 years (P=0.37) and there was no difference from those and the control IOLs (P=0.90). In 3 of 4 control IOLs, the PCO distributions were localized around the optic-haptic junctions.

Conclusions:

The IOL ZCB00V with continuous sharp edge across optic-haptic junctions were effective for preventing PCO.
