Grading in corectopia: a novel classification system

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present novel classification system of corectopia grading that standardizes clinical assessment by the detailed description of dilated and non-dilated pupil location with respect to cornea center.

Setting:

S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution, Moscow, Russia

Methods:

The proposed classification used as follows, the direction of decentration: superiorly (DecS), superonasal (DecSN), nasal (DecN), inferonasal (DecIN), inferior (DecI), inferotemporal (DecIT), temporal (DecT), superotemporal (DecST). The extent of pupil decentration: 0 – no corectopia observed; 1 – the pupil incorporates iris center; 2 – the pupil is out of the iris center. Extent in pharmacologically induced mydriasis (M): 0 – no corectopia observed; 1 – the pupil incorporates iris center; 2 – the pupil is out of the cornea center. The classification was validated by repeatability and reproducibility tests among ophthalmologists.

Results:

The novel classification system standardizes the clinical assessment and allows a detailed description of dilated and non-dilated pupil location with respect to cornea center. The proposed classification is highly reproducible and repeatable (the final results will be presented at the time of presentation).

Conclusions:

The use of the novel classification system advances the idea of detailed clinical classification that highlight the importance of pupil estimation in the therapeutic and surgical association.
