Abstract Details

Purpose:

Comparison of the parameters of the anterior eye segment using optical coherence tomography in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome before and after phacoemulsification cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation.

Setting:

Department of Diagnostics and Microsurgery of Glaucoma, Medical University of Lublin, Lublin, Poland

Methods:

In this prospective study the group of 111 eyes which underwent cataract surgery were evaluated. 62 eyes were diagnosed with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and senile cataract (PEX1) and 49 eyes were diagnosed with senile cataract -the control group (PEX0). Measurements of the anterior segment were conducted before and after cataract surgery (1day, 7days, 30days and 90days using optical coherence tomography – the Cornea/Anterior Segment OCT SS-1000 “CASIA" with assessed parameters such as: AOD500 (angle-opening distance), TISA500 (trabecular-iris space area) TIA500 (trabecular-iris angle), ACD (anterior chamber depth), ACV (anterior chamber volume).

Results:

The initial anterior eye segment parameters did not show significant differences comparing two groups. We have found statistically significant different inside each group (PEX1, PEX0) after cataract surgery during examination on 90 days regarding to AOD500, TISA500, TIA500, ACD and ACV. However, there were no statistically significant differences between parameters after catarcat surgery comparing two groups

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation caused an increase in the anterior eye segment parameters (AOD, TISA, TIA, ACD, ACV) no matter of PEX presence.
