Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the results of different refractive error measurement devices including table-mounted and hand-held autorefractors and retinocopy with and without cycloplegia.

Setting:

Opsis Institute of Ophthalmology

Methods:

We examined 127 children 5 to 10 years old who underwent full opthalmic examination. 254 eyes underwent autorefraction using table-mounted and hand-held autorefractors and retinoscopy with and without cycloplegia. All results were compared statistically.

Results:

The mean plus(+) spheric values of non-cycloplegic table-mounted autorefractor were found to be significantly lower. The difference was higher for the younger children. The cycloplegic table-mounted autorefractor measurements were found to be significantly higher than cycloplegic retinoscopy. No significantly statistically difference was found between hand-held autorefractor measurements and retinoscopy at spheric values and spherical equivalent values with cycloplegia. Without cycloplegia retinoscopy were 0.21 diopters higher at spheric values than hand-held autorefractor meauserments at ages after 7 years old which was no significant. The difference was higher for the younger children. The sensitivity in diagnostic astigmatism was high for all devices.

Conclusions:

Cycloplegic retinoscopy and hand-held autorefractor after cycloplegia can be used both in examination for children. The cycloplegic retinoscopy remains the most reliable way especially for younger children.
