Study of light scattering and corneal densitometry in patients with pterygium

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of pterygium on the dispersion of ocular light, aberrations, astigmatism and corneal densitometry.

Setting:

Hospital Clínico San Carlos. Madrid. SPAIN. IdISSC. Universidad complutense de Madrid

Methods:

A non-randomized, controlled, cross-sectional study was conducted in which patients with a clinical diagnosis of pterygium (group 1) and healthy controls (group 2). The ocular light scattering was determined by C-Quant. Corneal variables were determined by Oculus elevation topographer Pentacam.

Results:

35 eyes with pterygium were included (17 men and 18 women), (average age 41 years, sd 7.06). and 30 controls (average age 29.03 sd 4.87) The light scattering was 0.99 log in group 1 and 0.89 log in group 2, a non-significant difference (p = 0.067) that was maintained when analyzing the influence of age and sex in said parameter. Significant differences were found 4.8 vs. 7.1 between both groups in the total value of corneal densitometry (19.5 1.8 vs.2.8 respectively, p = 0.002) and total corneal aberration (2.8+/-16.2 vs 0.5+/-1.4 respectively, p<0.001).

Conclusions:

The pterygium does not produce a significant increase in scattering of light along the eye, although there is a tendency to significance. Patients with pterygium present greater densitometry and corneal aberration.
