Comparison of the Sirius (placido disk + Scheimpflug tomography) topographer and the MD-SD-OCT 'MS-39' (Placido's disk + spectral domain OCT) topographer

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the agreement of the corneal topography measurements obtained with the Sirius topographer and the MD-SD-OCT "MS-39" topographer (Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici (CSO) S.r.l. Florence, Italy) in healthy eyes.

Setting:

Vissum Corporation and Miguel Hernández University, Alicante, Spain

Methods:

This prospective consecutive comparative case series study comprised 30 healthy eyes of 30 patients with age ranging from 21 to 50 years. Three consecutive measurements were obtained with both topographers. The mean simulated anterior keatometry, the mean posterior keratometry at 3 mm, the thinnest corneal thickness the anterior and posterior asphericity at 4.5 and 8.00mm and the anterior, total and posterior corneal aberrations were analyzed. Analysis of agreement and interchangeability was performed by the Bland and Altman method. In the intrasession repeatability by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated.

Results:

Bland and Altman analysis showed good agreement between instruments only statistical significant differences between topographers were observed only for the posterior asphericity at 8.0mm and the posterior RMS spherical-like RMS (p≤0.03). For these parameters the mean of the differences were 0.178 and 0.014 µm, respectively. The ICCs of the Sirius were between 0.614 and 0.997 except for the anterior and posterior RMS spherical-like that were 0.344 and 0.492, respectively. The ICCs of the MS39 were between 0.687 and 0.999 except for the total RMS HOA, RMS coma-like and RMS spherical-like that were 0.260, 0.343 and 0.421, respectively.

Conclusions:

Preliminary outcomes show that Sirius and MD-SD-OCT "MS-39" provide an equivalent measurement and can be used interchangeably to measure corneal topography.
