Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate postoperative outcomes of toric IOL implantation in cataract surgery with lens subluxation caused by pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES).

Setting:

State Institution Zaporizhzhya Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education Ministry of Health of Ukraine

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of the phacoemulsification with toric IOL implantation on the eyes with preoperative corneal astigmatism and complicated cataract by subluxation was performed. Fifty two eyes of 48 patients were studied. Cylindrical power and axis placement were calculated using the Alcon toric intraocular lens calculator. The patients were divided on groups. The first group - 22 eyes with PES, absence of phakodenesis and toric IOL implantation, the second – 16 eyes with phakodenesis, capsular tension ring and toric IOL implantation, the third – 14 eyes – with phacoiridodenesis, Cionni ring with suture sclera fixation and toric IOL implantation.

Results:

The mean preoperative visual acuity was not significantly different in the groups. In all cases IOL remained well centered in early postoperative period. Decentration of IOL was revealed in 3 patients (19%) of the second group at 18 months follow up. During the period of follow-up the IOLs remained well ctntered and stable in all patients with toric IOL implantation combined with capsular tension ring suture fixation.

Conclusions:

Cataract phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation combined with capsular tension ring suture fixation allowed to correct corneal astigmatism and improve visual acuity in patients with PES and subluxated lenses
