Toric intraocular lenses for correction of astigmatism in non-standard cases of cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to study the results of phacoemulsification with the implantation of toric intraocular lenses (TIOL) in astigmatism and changed corneal architectonic.

Setting:

Ufa Eye Reseach Insitute, Ufa, Russia

Methods:

Phacoemulsification with TIOL implantation was performed in 32 patients (40 eyes) with cataract and corneal astigmatism. According to anamnesis it was established that radial keratotomy was performed in 12 patients (18 eyes) and penetrating keratoplasty was performed in 6 patients (6 eyes). Keratoconus was observed in 8 patients (10 eyes), traumatic changes in the cornea and the iris in 6 patients (6 eyes). All patients were implanted with the toric lens Acrysof IQ Toric (SN6A T3-T9). Preoperative astigmatism varied within 1.5-6.0 diopters. Visual acuity was from a light perception to 0.4 with correction.

Results:

There were no intra- and postoperative complications. In all cases, TIOL stayed in the correct position and maintained rotational stability (the maximum rotation angle was 3°) throughout the entire follow-up. The average uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) after surgery was 0.52 ± 0.11. The spherical component was 0.35 ± 0.05, the cylindrical component was 0.73 ± 0.12 D.

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification + TIOL implantation is an effective method for correcting ametropia and astigmatism in patients with cataracts and altered corneal topography.
