Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes after cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of either Tecnis Symfony (Johnson & Johnson Vision Surgical, Inc. Santa Ana CA) or Acrysof PanOptix (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA) intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Eye Clinic University of Verona, Verona Italy; Carones Ophthalmology Center, Milan, Italy.

Methods:

Each group of this prospective study comprised 50 eyes (25 patients) with a corneal astigmatism of <1.0 diopter (D). Cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of the Tecnis Symfony ERV IOL or the trifocal IOL Acrysof PanOptix was performed. The following outcomes were assessed 1 year postoperatively: uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), corrected intermediate visual acuity (CIVA) at 66 cm and 80 cm, uncorrected (UNVA) and corrected near visual acuity (CNVA) at 40 cm, refraction, and binocular defocus curve (from +2.0 to -4.0 D in 0.5 D steps). Visual acuity outcomes were assessed monocularly and binocularly.

Results:

Mean binocular distance-corrected visual outcomes for PanOptix and Symfony respectively were as follows. CDVA: -0.08±0.06 logMar and -0.09±0.05 logMar (p=0.488); CIVA (66cm): 0.10±0.03 logMar and 0.07±0.03 logMar (p=0.002); CIVA (80cm): 0.15±0.03 logMar and 0.07±0.05 logMar (p<0.001); CNVA: 0.14±0.04 logMar and 0.26±0.05 logMar (p<0.001). Mean spherical equivalent was -0.14±0.42 D (PanOptix) and -0.09±0.49 D (Symfony) with no significant difference between the groups.

Conclusions:

The AcrySof PanOptix and Tecnis Symfony IOLs showed comparable visual performance for distance vision. Better intermediate vision was provided by the Symfony ERV IOL whereas the trifocal PanOptix provided better outcomes for near visual acuity.
