Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the optical and predicted visual performance provided by the Next Generation TECNIS Symfony (NGS) intraocular lens (IOL) with that of its predecessor, the TECNIS Symfony IOL.

Setting:

Implant R&D, Johnson and Johnson Surgical Vision, The Netherlands

Methods:

NGS is based on the same diffractive technology as TECNIS Symfony IOL. It consists of a diffractive profile that corrects for ocular chromatic aberration and extends the depth of focus. This diffractive profile has been optimized to further extend the depth of focus and therefore, improve near performance, while keeping similar distance and intermediate vision as TECNIS Symfony IOL. Through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) was measured for both lens models to assess optical behavior and predict visual performance. Binocular visual acuity (VA) was simulated using the area under the MTF from 1 to 50 cycles per mm (MTFa).

Results:

Simulated VA predicted a range of vision of more than 2.5D with a visual acuity of 0.2LogMAR for NGS. The range of vision was 2.0D for TECNIS Symfony IOL for the same VA threshold. Therefore, NGS is expected to extend the depth of focus by at least 0.5D. This results in an improvement in simulated near vision of 1.5 lines with NGS as compared to TECNIS Symfony IOL. For distance vision and for the largest pupil, MTFa is comparable for both IOLs, indicating that distance image quality is comparable for both designs.

Conclusions:

The optical quality and simulated visual performance provided by the Next Generation TECNIS Symfony IOL were compared with that of its predecessor. Preclinical data showed that the new design further extended the depth of focus and improved near performance as compared to TECNIS Symfony IOL, with maintaining distance image quality.
