Non-mydriatic camera for diabetic retinopathy screening in a primary health care center

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the prevalence and severity of diabetic retinopathy (RD) thorugh the screening of a non midriatic camera in a catalan primary health care.

Setting:

Sant Martí primary health care center-Parc de Salut Mar. Barcelona. Spain.

Methods:

this is a cross-sectional study. Were included patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) types 1 and 2 that were screened with a non midriatic camera. A nursing assistant was the person who toke the retinograph and intraocular pressure. A trained family doctor was who evaluated the images. Retinography was classified as: no RD, mild non-proliferative RD, moderate non-proliferative RD, severe non-proliferative RD and proliferative RD.

Results:

1344 patients were screened between september 2016 to june 2017. 19.4% of the patients presented any type of DM. 40% of those had mild non –proliferative RD, 8% presented moderate non-proliferative RD and 8% has severe non-proliferatve RD. 33% of the patients with any type of RD had DM for more than 15 years. 49% of the patients with RD were treated with insulin.

Conclusions:

our results show that non-midriatic camera is usefull for RD screening. And, moreover allowed descreased the number of visits to the opthalmology as fron de 1344 patients, only 261 patients needed an ophtalmology visit.
