Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the effect of orthokeratology lens on axial elongation in children.

Setting:

Saevit Eye Hospital, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea

Methods:

A total of one hundred subjects, ranging in age from 6 to 13 years, and with mild to moderate myopia no more than -4.00 diopters(D), visited our clinic from September 2013 to December 2015, and were treated with duration of at least 1 year for analysis. The orthokeratology group (60 subjects) and the spectacle group (40 subjects) were compared and analyzed on the axial elongation and associated factors

Results:

Mean increase of axial length was 0.22±0.28mm in orthokeratology lens group and 0.41±0.20mm in spectacle group. The statistically significant suppression of axial elongation in orthokeratology group then the spectacle group. The orthokeratology lens starting age had negative correlation with axial elongation (r=-0.469).In spectacles group, the spectacles starting age had negative correlation with axial elongation(r=-0.320) and baseline spherical equivalent, spherical diopter, cylindrical diopter had positive correlation with axial elongation. In the axial elongation comparison between two groups by age group(6 to 9 years, 9 to 13 years), 9 to 13 years of orthokeratology group had the stronger suppression of myopic progression.

Conclusions:

The orthokeratology lens effectively suppresses axial elongation compared to the spectacles. Although the patients are older for starting orthokeratology lens(from 9 to 13 years), the axial elongation was effectively suppressed myopic progression.
