Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the outcomes of accelerated corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) and conventional corneal CXL.

Setting:

Private practice, Laser Eye Clinic, Tirana, Albania

Methods:

Patients were divided into two groups as the accelerated CXL group and the conventional CXL group.Eyes with progressive keratoconus had accelerated CXL (KXL system;10 minutes riboflavin,Vibex Rapid, presoak;8 minutes 30 mW/cm2 ultraviolet-A [UVA] light, puls 1sec on ,1 sec off )or conventional CXL, 30 minutes riboflavin presoak; 30 minutes 3 mW/cm2 UVA light.The uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA ), corrected distant visual acuity (CDVA), refraction and keratometric values were measured preoperatively and postoperatively.The postoperative changes in visual acuity, keratometry readings, morphologic changes in the cornea, demarcation line existence, with accelerated CXL and conventional CXL were compared.The follow-up was 12-18 months.

Results:

The study enrolled 32 eyes of 28 patients , 20 eyes had accelerated and 12 eyes had conventional CXL.The mean UDVA and CDVA were better at the 12 and 18 month postoperative when compared with preoperative values in two groups. The decrease in the mean corneal power (Km) and maximum keratometric value (Kmax) were statistically significant in both groups . There was no statistically significant difference in visual and refractive results between the two groups (pā€‰>ā€‰0.05), in the keratometric value and mean corneal power between the procedures. Similar morphologic changes and demarcation line were apparent in both groups postoperatively.

Conclusions:

Accelerated CXL and conventional CXL were both safe and effective. Accelerated CXL, being a fast procedure, appears to be more beneficial for patients and surgeons.
