Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the safety and efficacy of refractive lens exchange with bilateral implantation of the RayOne® Trifocal (Rayner®, UK) multifocal preloaded intraocular lens (IOL) for presbyopia correction.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Hospital de Braga, Portugal

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized clinical trial, which included 20 eyes of 10 patients submitted to refractive bilateral lens exchange with RayOne® Trifocal IOL implantation. All patients keratometric astigmatism < 1,50 D and aged > 50 years old. The minimum follow-up was 6 months with the following outcome measures: monocular and binocular, corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate (70 cm) and near (40 cm) visual acuities (logMAR), manifest refraction, binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity at photopic and scotopic luminance levels. IOL power was calculated using partial coherence laser interferometry (Zeiss IOL Master®; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany), refractive target was emmetropia for both eyes.

Results:

A total of 20 eyes of 10 patients included; mean age was 60 ± 8,05. At 6 months, all eyes obtained a SE within ± 0.50 D, mean residual sphere and astigmatism were 0,00 ± 0,16 D and -0,25 ± 0,32 D. Mean uncorrected binocular (LogMar) visual acuity was 0,00 ± 0,06; 0,00 ± 0,06 e 0,2 ± 0,08 for distance, intermediate and near, respectively. Mean distance corrected binocular visual acuity was -0,1 ± 0,09; 0,00 ± 0,06 and 0,1 ± 0,05 for all three distances, respectively. Contrast sensitivity values were between normal range.

Conclusions:

The RayOne® Trifocal (Rayner®, UK) is a safe and effective solution for presbyopia correction, offering superior distance, intermediate and near visual performances. The new optimized preloaded IOL platform delivered excellent safety profile and good intraoperative comfort for the surgeon.
