Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the optical properties of a novel monofocal extended depth of focus IOL, which demonstrates a single broadened modulation transfer function peak and meets the ISO 11979-2 monofocal optical standard, in contrast to a conventional bifocal extended depth of focus IOL, which demonstrates double modulation transfer function peaks.

Setting:

Advanced Vision Science, Goleta, California, USA and Tatvum Research Optics Laboratory, Orange County, California, USA

Methods:

A model eye with an ISO model cornea optically coupled with a CCD camera was used to provide simulated retinal images of real-world polychromatic objects under photopic and mesopic conditions. Image analysis software then provided data for comparison of monofocal and bifocal extended depth of focus IOLs. Subjects undergoing cataract surgery were implanted with the monofocal extended depth of focus IOL. Postoperatively, intermediate and distance visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and subjective measures of dysphotopsia were evaluated.

Results:

Image analysis performed using 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm apertures, representing photopic and mesopic pupil sizes, respectively, demonstrated that the monofocal extended depth of focus IOL produced less severe photic phenomena, including halo and glare, compared to the bifocal extended depth of focus IOL. Clinical data provided correlation with optical bench studies.

Conclusions:

Visual disturbances related to halo and glare are known to occur with bifocal extended depth of focus IOLs. These disturbances can be alleviated with monofocal extended depth of focus IOLs. Clinical data provided correlation with optical bench studies.
