Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present a novel technique of combined iris and lens reconstruction after complex devastating trauma of the anterior segment
Setting:
Augentagesklinik-Spreebogen, Berlin, Germany
Methods:
A 27 year old lady was referred to our clinic 6 years after a car accident with complex facial injuries, corneal scar after a perforating wound, complete loss of the iris and partial loss of the lens of the right eye. Extended Soemmerring’s ring formation was present and vitreous was connected to the corneal scar.
Anterior viterectomy and removal of Soemmering’s ring was performed initially. An Artisan® IOL and a personalized artificial iris were attached to each other extraocularly. Implantation technique and in situ suture fixation are illustrated by video.
Results:
The BCVA improved from hand movement preoperatively to 25/100 and no glare was reported postoperatively. The subjective and objective aesthetical outcome was very satisfying.
Conclusions:
In cases with complex combined iris and lens trauma, the here presented treatment offers a challenging but satisfying option in terms of visual and aesthetic rehabilitation.
