Purpose:
To report the 5-year refractive results and endothelial cell loss after iris-claw phakic intraocular lens (IOL) implantation to correct high myopia, and to compare our results with other studies
Setting:
Mouassat University Hospital, Damascus University, Syria
Methods:
A prospective interventional clinical study was carried out. 44 eyes of 27 patients underwent implantation of iris-claw phakic IOL (Ophtec BV, Groningen, the The Netherlands) to correct high myopia. Outcome measures included the uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), endothelial cell loss and complications
Results:
Patients were followed for 5 years postoperatively. Postoperative UDVA was ≥ 0.5 in 65% of eyes, ≥ 0.8 in 34.3% of eyes and ≥ 1.0 in 19.8% of eyes at last follow up. Postoperative CDVA was ≥ 0.5 in 86.2% of eyes, ≥ 0.8 in 51.6% of eyes, ≥ 1.0 in 34.7% of eyes and ≥ 1.2 in 20.5% of eyes at last follow up. Mean endothelial cell loss was 3.3% at last follow up. No major intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted
Conclusions:
Implantation of iris-claw phakic IOL offers good outcomes, efficacy and safety. The 5-year endothelial cell loss in our study is comparable with other international studies
