Purpose:
To evaluate tear film quality and ocular surface stability in patients after cataract surgery
Setting:
Clinic of ophthalmology, Clinical centre Kragujevac, Serbia
Methods:
This prospective randomized study examined 100 eyes from 100 patients who underwent phacoemulsification. Detailed ophthalmological examination was performed for every patient (slit-lamp examination, Schirmer test, tear film break up time) -1 day before and 1 day, 1 month, and 3 months after phacoemuslification
Results:
The Schirmer test mean results indicated that only on 1st postoperative day were higher, with statistical significance. Tear break up time test results indicated statistically significant decreasing at 1st postoperative day, p<0.0.1. Normal TBUT values to preoperative values till 1st postoperative month, without using of artificial tears.
Conclusions:
Cataract surgery disturbs tear film stability with different mechanisms (eye drops instilling, exposure to microscope light, using of phaco tips, corneal incision, suture, etc.). Damages of the ocular surface and tear film approximately return to preoperative values till 1 month after the performed surgery. This fact must be presented to every patient before the surgery.
