Abstract Details

Purpose:

To provide a valuable source of information about the causes for explantation of any type of biomedical device and to improve future therapies.

Setting:

CSO, Florence, Italy. Vissum, Alicante, Spain. Division of Ophthalmology, Miguel Hernández University, Alicante, Spain.

Methods:

Explanted IOLs are stored in fixing solution to preserve biological information. The RETICS’ members collect the explanted material from the eye and the related data. The IBERIA Biobank mainly gathers explanted intraocular lenses (of the total amount recorded 36% are phakic lenses and 47% are pseudophakic lenses), explanted intracorneal segments (10%),other materials (7%), and the information relative to the materials removed from the eye. Nowadays, the continuation and expansion of the IOL Biobank is one of the milestones in the current RETIC project with reference number RD16/0008.

Results:

The group headed by Professor J.L. Alio has published two thesis, nine papers and nine conference contributions based on the Biobank data. One conclusion obtained is that the main causes for IOL explantation in Portugal and Spain are dislocation or descentration followed by incorrect IOL power and IOL opacification. A report regarding the causes for intraocular lens pseudophakic and phakic lens explantation and two thesis are been prepared with data which have been included in the IBERIA Biobank.

Conclusions:

The IBERIA Biobank is available for the scientific community. These data are available on request and with the agreement of the specific committee for research studies. All interested centers can contribute to the Biobank by sending the explanted samples with the form.
