Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the outcomes of pterygium surgeries performed by extended and regular limbal conjunctival auto-grafting.
Setting:
VeniVidi Eye Hospital - Istanbul
Methods:
This study is designed to compare two techniques in order to determine the complication and recurrence rates after pterygium exision. Included in the study were 80 eyes from 80 patients. The patients were randomly divided into 2 study groups. Extended limbal auto-grafting was performed by harvesting superior limbal conjunctiva 2 mm larger than the pterygium head. All patients who underwent surgery were followed up for between 6 months and 2 years.
Results:
Ten recurrences (25%) were observed in the regular group whereas there were 4 (10%) recurrences in the extended group. No healing defects were observed in the superior limbal conjunctiva in any groups. There were no major complications threatening visual ability in the surgical patients.
Conclusions:
A comparison of the groups demonstrated that the recurrence rate was lower in the extended limbal conjunctival auto-grafting group. Although the extended conjunctival auto-grafting technique is a more difficult and time consuming technique than the others, cosmetic and surgical results were found to be superior.
