Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of laser vitreolysis in the treatment of semifixed Weiss ring in the eyes with complete posterior vitreous detachment.
Setting:
Federal State Autonomous Institution "S.N. Fedorov National Medical Research Center "MNTK "Eye Microsurgery" of the Ministry of Health of the Russia, Volgograd.
Methods:
This prospective study included 24 eyes of 19 patients aged from 35 to 88 years with semifixed Weiss ring that partly obscured macular and caused visual discomfort. YAG-laser vitreolysis was performed with Ultra Q Reflex laser (Ellex Medical, Australia). Parameters of laser procedure were as follows: wave length -1064 nm, pulse duration- 4 ns, spot diameter -8 ms. Laser energy was selected individually and varied from 3,5 to 7,5 mJ, number of impulses -50-300. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at baseline was 0.66 ± 0.057.
Results:
At follow-up examinations at 2 weeks and 2 months after laser vitreolysis there was a significant decrease in the area of opacities from 4.35 ± 0.5 mm2 to 0.22 ± 0.05 mm2 (p<0.05). Mean BCVA remained practically stable (before treatment - 0,64, 2 months after - 0,68).
Conclusions:
Laser vitreolysis is effective in the destruction of the vitreous body - the Weiss ring on the background of a complete posterior vitreous detachment.
