Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the visual acuity outcomes in patients with thickened choroid, who require frequent intravitreal anti-Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF )injections for the treatment of choroidal neovascularisation(CNVM).
Setting:
This was a retrospective , observational study analysing the visual acuity outcomes of anti-VEGF treatment in consecutively treated, treatment naive eyes with nAMD in patients from all Moorfields Eye Hospital sites.
Methods:
Patients with wet age related macular degeneration (AMD ) requiring more than 8 injections in the second year of treatment were included in the study. The diagnosis of pachychoroid was made using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI OCT). Measurements above 300 microns were considered.
Results:
71 eyes from 71 patients were included in the study. Vision acuity was found to be stable from 62.2±12.8 at baseline to 61.9±17.7 for the total cohort of patients. From these eyes, thickened choroid was found in 17 eyes. Vision acuity in this subgroup declined from 63.9±11.7 at baseline to 60.8±17.6 at the end of follow up despite the need for more intense treatment with 10.5±1.1 injections in year 2.
Conclusions:
The presence of thickened choroid may predispose to prolonged treatment with intravitreal anti-VEFG injections with more limited visual outcomes.
