Purpose:
This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of B-mode method for acquiring the anteroposterior length of the eye compared to A scan immersion and the optical (IOL Master 500) methods in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Setting:
Basir Eye Clinic,Tehran,Iran.
Methods:
This study included 350 eyes of 235 patients referred to Basir Eye Clinic, Tehran, Iran. Initially, patients were evaluated using the Zeiss IOL master 500 method. Then anteroposterior length was measured using A scan Immersion method (Sonomed VuMAX HD) and also B-mode method.
Results:
In total 405 eyes from 282 patients entered the study but IOL master was unable to measure anteroposterior length in 55 eyes of 47 patients (15% of total population entering the study) so 350 eyes of 235 patients finally were analyzed. The mean anteroposterior length reading with IOL master was 23.351 ± 1.40 mm, with B mode method it was 23.423 ± 1.391 and with A mode method it was 23.328 ± 1.389 showing no statistically significant difference between these three methods.
Conclusions:
The B mode method is an accurate method for measuring anteroposterior length and can be used in cataract surgery candidates whose axial length cannot be measured using routine methods.
