Comparison of aspheric and wavefront-guided Femto-LASIK results in groups formed by propensity score matching method

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the results of standard aspheric (SA) and wavefront-guided (WFG) laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis with femtosecond laser-assisted flap formation (femto-LASIK) in myopic patients.

Setting:

Belarussian state medical academy of postgraduate education, 10-th Minsk city hospital

Methods:

Data of 151 (101 — SA, 50 — WFQ) patients that undergone femto-LASIK was analyzed. To form completly comparable groups propensity score matching (PSM) method was used. Data included full anamnesis with complaints on vision quality (CVQ) and physical ocular discomfort (POD), vision specific quality of life (VSQoL) evaluated by NEI-VFQ-25 (National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire) (VFQ), as well as uncorrected VA (UCVA), best spectacle corrected VA (BSCVA) and aberrometry (WaveScan WaveFront® System) before and 6 months after the operation.

Results:

Postoperative refractive result (р=0,93) and UCVA (р=0,67 for UCVA ≥ 1,0, р=0,89 for UCVA 0,55 – 0,8) were almost equal in both groups. Postoperative values of higher-order aberrations (HOA) were substantially lower in WFG Group (p<0,001). Visual life quality improved (р<0,001) in both groups (p=0,24). Percentage of patients with PD increased in SA Group to 47,3%, in WFG Group to 27,3% (р=0,014) as well as with CVQ: 57,3% in SA Group, 27,3% in WFG group (р<0,001). VSQoL values omproved in signofocantly in both groups without statistical prevalence (p=0,24).

Conclusions:

SA and WFG femto-LASIK are considered to be commeasurable in refractive outcome, achieved UCVA and BSCVA, VSQoL improvement in groups formed by propencity score matching method. WFG femto-LASIK Group had statistically better results in postoperative HOA induction and values, percentage of patients with CVQ and PD. PSM method is a good option for creating comparable groups in non-randomized prospective practice-based studies.
