Purpose:
To evaluate the intrasession repeatability of corneal curvature and astigmatism measurements obtained with the Cassini topographic system in healthy eyes
Setting:
Optometric Clinic, University of Alicante
Methods:
This study enrolled 40 eyes of 40 patients ranging in age from 18 to 55 years. All of them underwent a complete eye examination, including a corneal topographic analysis with the Cassini system (Cassini Technologies, The Hague, The The Netherlands). Three consecutive measurements were obtained with this device to assess the intrasession repeatability of curvature and astigmatism parameters. The within-subject standard deviation (Sw), intrasubject precision (1.96xSw) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated.
Results:
All Sw for posterior corneal curvature measurements (flattest, steepest and mean values) were below 0.07 mm, with ICC above 0.954. The Sw for posterior corneal astigmatism was 0.08 D, with an ICC associated of 0.884. Concerning the axis of astigmatism, its Sw was 6.03º, with an ICC value associated of 0.996. No statistically significant correlations were found between the magnitude of curvature and astigmatism and their Sw (r≤0.360, p≥0.118), revealing that there was not an increase in the variability of measurements obtained with the system for steeper or more astigmatic corneas.
Conclusions:
The Cassini topographic system is able to provide consistent measurements of curvature and astigmatism of the posterior corneal surface in healthy eyes
