Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a case of corneal epithelial ingrowth noticed five years after Presbia inlay insertion for presbyopia treatment

Setting:

University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece

Methods:

Male patient 48 y.o referred to our hospital complaining about irritation and pain in his right eye. He had a history of Presbia insertion 5 years ago in that eye. An infiltration – like lesion was obvious with a small defect over it. Corneal scraping was performed and the patient was treated with topical antibiotics and tears. Cultures were negative for infection, the defect cured but the infiltration was stable. Confocal microscopy was also negative for infection but revealed an epithelial ingrowth possibly associated with the previous inlay surgery. The ingrowth was surgically washed through the old insertion port.

Results:

The patient is stable 1 year later with no sign of recurrence.

Conclusions:

To our knowledge this is the first case report that presents an epithelial ingrowth after Presbia inlay insertion. This compication can be safely treated with minimal invasion.
