Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate and compare the visual, refractive and corneal topographic outcomes in patients treated with Corneal Collagen Crosslinking (CXL) verus Corneal Collagen Crosslinking (CXL) combined with Intacs implantation.
Setting:
Eye7, Chaudhary Eye Centre,
Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi
India
Methods:
38 eyes of 30 keratoconous patients were treated with CXL or CXL with Intacs implantation (femtosecond assisted) performed simultaneously using standard treatment protocol.
24 eyes underwent CXL alone procedure and 14 eyes underwent CXL with Intacs implantation. The patients were followed-up for an average of 9.4±3.0 (range 6-17) months
Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), corrected corrected visual acuity(BCVA), manifest refraction, spherical equivalent (SE),corneal topography and D-value for pre-operative, 3-month and final followup were obtained. The results in the CXL group were compared with the CXL with Intacs group.
Results:
CXL alone group resulted in improvement of UCVA by 0.17±0.16 log units
( p<0.01),spherical equivant by 1.18±0.85 D (p<0.01) and cylinder by 0.97±0.98 D (p<0.01). There was decrease in Kmean by 1.68± 3.4 D (p<0.05) and Kmax by 2.19± 5.20 D (p≤0.05). CXL with Intacs provided an improvement of UCVA by 0.36±0.18 log units ( p<0.01),spherical equivant by 3.04±1.71 D (p<0.01) and cylinder by 3.07±1.43 D (p<0.01). There was decrease in Kmean by 3.18±2.35 D (p<0.01) and Kmax by 3.69±2.87 D (p<0.01).
Conclusions:
Though both procedures provided significantly improved vision, manifest refraction and corneal topography measurements, the combined procedure of CXL with simultaneous Intacs implantation showed an clinically significant additive effect with a better clinical outcome.
