Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of a patient with keratoconus who underwent ICRS implantation in both eyes and Athens Protocol afterwards in one eye.

Setting:

REFRACTA RIO

Methods:

Case report of an 18-year-old woman diagnosed with keratoconus grade 3 confirmed by Pentacam HR corneal tomography (Oculus; Wetzlar, Germany

Results:

Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was 20/400 on the right eye (OD) and 20/60 on the left eye (OS), and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) owas 20/60 OD and 20/50 OS. Femtosecond ICRS implantation was indicated first for the right eye. Thirty days after the surgery on the left eye, UDVA was 20/100 OD and 20/25 OS and BCVA was 20/40 OD and 20/25 OS. Athens Protocol was indicated one year after. Topoguided ablation (PTK-TCAT) of 40µm was realized with collagen crosslinking in a sequence. Three months after UDVA was 20/60 and 20/30 and BCVA was 20/20 and 20/25, respectively.

Conclusions:

Nowadays there are some alternatives for the treatment of keratoconus to postpone keratoplasty and improve visual acuity. The specific indications must be analyzed individually to offer the best option for each patient.
