Abstract Details

Purpose:

To establish the risk of late onset blebitis and endophthalmitis following trabeculectomy surgery for the treatment of glaucoma and to identify possible risk factors.

Setting:

Retrospective case series carried out in the eye unit University hospital of Nottingham, Queens Medical center. Nottingham, UK

Methods:

We reviewed all cases underwent fornix-based mitomycin C (MMC) (concentration 0.2mg/ml and 0.4mg/ml)) augmented trabeculectomy by a single surgeon (Anthony W King) at queen’s medical centre, Nottingham university hospital NHS trust between January 2001 and December 2010. All types of glaucoma treated were included, combined phaco and trabeculectomy and first and redo trabeculectomy were also included. Only one eye per patient was included.

Results:

A total of 324 eyes of 324 patients were included in this study The total follow-up period for this cohort was 2221.56 patient years. Rate of blebitis/BRE in this cohort was 0.903/1000 patient-years (Fishers Exact 95% 1.09-32.5) i.e. 0.09% risk per year.

Conclusions:

To conclude although MMC is now standard practice, according to our study the long term risk of endophthalmitis remains quite low, which is quite fundemantal in weighing risks and benefits for our patients.
