Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the effectiveness of XEN implant as a single procedure and XEN combined with cataract surgery and assess their complication rate.
Setting:
Royal Eye Infirmary, Dorset County Hospital, UK
Methods:
This is a prospective study over a period of 1.5 years, during which standardized procedures were performed by 2 surgeons. Patients were asked to stop their antiglaucoma medication 1 week preoperatively and ocular surface disease was treated.
Results:
39 patients underwent XEN implantation (GroupA) and 32 patients underwent cataract surgery combined with XEN (GroupB). Mean IOP preoperatively was 19.78mmHg in GroupA, reducing by 25%, 38.62% at 3 and 6 months postoperatively respectively. In GroupB mean IOP was 20.75mmHg preoperatively, which dropped by 25.49%, 25.78% at 3 and 6 months postoperatively respectively. Number of antiglaucoma medication preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively decreased from 2.63 to 0.28 for GroupA and from 2.93 to 1 for GroupB. 12.82 % of patients in GroupA and 9.37 % of patients in GroupB required a further procedure in order to achieve target pressure.
Conclusions:
IOP reduction was observed in both groups, with a greater reduction (p > 0.05) and less amount of antiglaucoma drops in Group A (p < 0.05). Complications and further management appeared slightly easier in Group B (p > 0.05).
