Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual and optical quality outcomes of SMILE, IntraLASIK and TransPRK performed on myopic patients.

Setting:

Vissum Instituto Oftalmologico, Alicante, Spain

Methods:

This study included 90 patients (90 eyes), aged 20-47 years, who underwent refractive surgery for myopia correction. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the surgical technique performed, with 30 eyes per group. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and spherical equivalent (SE) were noted preoperatively, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. The third-generation Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS®, Visiometrics S L, Terrasa, Spain) was used to measure ocular optical quality and tear film influence. Statistical analysis was performed between preoperative and postoperative values, along with a Kruskal-Wallis analysis to define possible inter-group differences.

Results:

No statistically significant differences were detected in the post-operative uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, spherical equivalent, MTF (Modular Transfer Function) cut-off frequency, and SR (Strehl Ratios) between groups (p>0.05). No statistically significant differences were also found between the pre-operative and post-operative values with regard to tear film influence on ocular optical quality(p>0.05).

Conclusions:

SMILE, IntraLASIK and TransPRK provide similar visual and ocular optical quality results in the treatment of myopia.
