Abstract Details

Purpose:

Several strategies are available to address the problem of presbyopia after lens surgery. Among others, multifocal intraocular lenses or monovision can be used to increase spectacle independence. The toric TECNIS Symfony IOL is based on a new concept to increase the depth of field, also called enhanced depth of focus (EDOF) IOL. The present trial investigates the rotational stability and the patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of a toric TECNIS Symfony IOL.

Setting:

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery Hanusch Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

In total 26 patients were included into the study. Every patient received the toric TECNIS Symfony IOL bilaterally. One year after surgery, 20 patients attended the follow up examination. Patient satisfaction was assessed via standardized questionnaires and rotation stability was assessed using retroillumination pictures.

Results:

Three month after surgery rotational stability was excellent (mean rotation 3.49°± 3,5). Patients were very satisfied with their IOL, with 90% of the patients stating they would choose this type of IOL again. Absolute spectacle independence was achieved in 65% of the patients. No adverse event occurred and no IOL had to be explanted so far.

Conclusions:

The toric EDOF IOL shows a high rotational stability and patients were highly satisfied one year after bilateral implantation.
