Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the influence of both cataract severity and pseudophakia on patient depth of field as calculated by the wavefront measured Visual Strehl ratio Optical Transfer Function (50%VSOTF).

Setting:

Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology - Rochester, MN USA

Methods:

Ray-tracing wavefront aberrometry iTrace (Tracey Technologies; Houston, Texas USA) measurements including the 50%VSOTF depth of field (DOF) were recorded for 6,957 eyes in a cataract surgery patient population from 2014-7. Data were deidentified, exported, and analyzed using R and RStudio.

Results:

Eyes with no recorded cataract surgery event had a mean DOF of 1.81 diopters (D) which was positively correlated with measures of cataract severity including both lens opacity and the dysfunctional lens index (p<0.01). Monofocal IOL (Alcon SA60AT) cataract surgery eyes had a mean DOF of 2.56 D pre-op versus 1.32 D post-op (p<0.01; 95% CI for difference 1.17,1.32 D).

Conclusions:

In phakic eyes wavefront measured 50%VSOTF depth of field is positively associated with measures of increasing cataract severity. Monofocal IOL pseudophakia results in a significant decrease in depth of field relative to pre-op phakic patients.
