Effect of vitamin D supplementation on the ocular surface of patients with vitamin D deficiency

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Vitamin D deficiency is a common health problem worldwide and vitamin D is known to have anti-inflammatory action. Ocular inflamamation is the leading problem in dry eye patients. In this study we aimed to investigate the effect of vitamin D replacement on the ocular surface of patients with vitamin D deficiency.

Setting:

Health Sciences University Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital

Methods:

A total of 40 patients (34 females, six males, mean age: 48,4 ± 11,075 years) with vitamin D deficiency followed by the Endocrinology and Metabolism Department of Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital were enrolled in the study. Patients were given 50.000 units of oral vitamin D weekly, over a period of eight weeks. After eight weeks, 1500-2000 units/d were prescribed for 6 months. Eyelid margin score, meibomian gland exspressibility score, Oxford grading, Schirmer I test, tear break up time (TBUT), tear osmolarity and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score were evaluated at baseline, eighth week, third and sixth month.

Results:

Meibomian gland exspressibility score, Schirmer, TBUT, tear osmolarity and OSDI scores showed improvement at 8 weeks after vitamin D supplementation compared to baseline values (p<0,05, paired t test). This improvement was maintained at third and sixth months. Compared to pretreatment values, eyelid margin score and Oxford grading were decreased at third month. (p<0,05, paired t test)

Conclusions:

Vitamin D replacement improves the health of ocular surface and leads to decrease the symptoms of the patients related to dry eye.
